Harry Maguire emerged as the match-winner for Manchester United in an exciting game at Old Trafford, leading them to a 3-2 home victory over Ipswich Town despite playing more than half the match with ten men.
The first half was packed with action, featuring four goals and a red card, with Patrick Dorgu involved in two crucial incidents.
Dorgu’s early mistake occurred just four minutes into the match when a miscommunication with goalkeeper André Onana allowed Jaden Philogene to score one of the easiest goals of his career. As Onana rushed out to collect the ball, Dorgu inadvertently passed it past him, allowing Philogene to tap it into an empty net from six yards out.
United managed to turn the game around after another unfortunate error, this time contributing to an own goal by Sam Morsy. Matthijs de Ligt then scored from close range, putting the Red Devils ahead 2-1.
Dorgu’s evening worsened at the 43-minute mark when he committed a heavy tackle on Omari Hutchinson. After a VAR review, the young Danish full-back was shown a red card.
Just four minutes later, Philogene struck again, leveling the score at 2-2. His inswinging cross, intended for Liam Delap in the box, evaded the striker and perplexed Onana enough for it to roll into the back of the net.
Even with one player down, United regained the lead just two minutes into the second half thanks to Maguire’s header. The center-back powered in a header from Bruno Fernandes’ corner, marking his first Premier League goal of the season and the sixth of his seven league goals for the club that have come from headers.
In typical circumstances, a home win against Ipswich isn’t surprising. However, following a string of five defeats in their last six home league matches and playing with a man short for a significant portion of the game, this victory is crucial for Ruben Amorim and his United side.
