Aston Villa came from behind to defeat Chelsea 2-1 at home, thanks to a second-half double from Marco Asensio, with Marcus Rashford providing both assists.
Rashford and Asensio stole the spotlight by combining effectively on two occasions to secure a stunning comeback against Chelsea.
Chelsea took an early lead when an unmarked Enzo Fernandez tapped in a cross from Pedro Neto in the 9th minute. However, the momentum shifted after Rashford entered the game.
The Manchester United loanee replaced Jacob Ramsey at halftime, and it didn’t take long for him to make an impact. In the 57th minute, Rashford’s outstretched leg squared the ball to fellow newcomer Asensio, who scored his first goal in claret and blue.
With the equalizer boosting their confidence, Villa continued to press forward, and the same duo linked up for the winning goal in the 89th minute. Asensio’s shot slipped under the body of Filip Jorgensen following another assist from Rashford.
Both players were brought to the club on temporary deals during the January transfer window and are now starting to find their place in Unai Emery’s squad. Their contributions have propelled Villa to within one point of Chelsea, who missed the opportunity to move into the top four.
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery stated, “In the last three home matches in the Premier League, we performed really well. We were demanding because we were not achieving points despite playing well.”
To the delight of Emery and the fanbase, it seems that Villa may have struck gold with their January signings.
