10 Students in Custody After School Fire

At least 10 students have been arrested in connection with the Sunday night incident at Litein Boys High School in Kericho County, where learners went on a rampage and set parts of the school on fire, causing significant destruction.

Confirming the arrests during an interview with Citizen TV on Monday, September 22, Kericho Governor Eric Mutai revealed that the suspects were identified through CCTV footage captured within the institution.

The footage, he said, provided critical leads that enabled security officers to swiftly track down and apprehend those believed to have played a role in the chaos.

Governor Mutai commended the County security team for their quick response to the matter, noting that investigations are already underway.

He added that the arrested students are being interrogated to provide more details on what sparked the unrest and to establish whether more learners were involved in planning or executing the arson attack.

Governor Eric Mutai has announced that a special meeting will soon be convened with Ministry of Education officials to address the challenges facing Litein Boys High School in the wake of Sunday night’s unrest.

He noted that the discussions would focus on both internal and external issues in order to identify the root causes of the incident.

The school was closed indefinitely after students protested being denied a chance to watch the English Premier League match between Arsenal and Manchester City.

The protest quickly escalated into violence, with learners setting fire to dormitories and classrooms.

Videos widely circulated on social media showed buildings engulfed in flames and heavy smoke.

Reports further indicated that students managed to overpower security personnel and police after switching off lights in the compound, allowing them to carry out the destruction under the cover of darkness.
